Skills are so important, and we don’t realize how these will benefit us if SHTF. I have made a pack with myself to learn one major skill a month, and I have tried to stick to that. I may not have made it every month, but I have tried. This month I learned how to do hay on our farm. As a little girl, I bucked hay with my family, but this year I learned what equipment to use and the process we followed to get it prepared to go in the barn. We actually dropped it too early, and the hay is damaged a bit from the three days of rain. We rolled it with the rake yesterday and we will try and bail it today. If nothing else, we will use it as straw. It pays to watch the weather and follow what the cycles are.
So, my point, learn something new once a month. A few other skills I have learned over the year is interesting. Early last year, my husband taught me to fish. Yes, it was for rainbow trout, and I know this isn’t salmon fishing, but the trout are fighters and sneaky little devils. Fishing is a delicate balance of luck and knowing what to do. Once you drop the line in the water, you must be able to feel your line for a jerk on the other end. Once it jerks your line, you must yank your line to get the trout on your line. Then reeling it in is my favorite part. You must not lose the fish when bringing it in. I love the fight with the fish. Getting it on shore before it jumps off is challenging. Fishing is one of the most relaxing things I do.
As I said skills are a must right now. Some of the other things I have learned are wide and vast. Last year my friend from down the street taught me to pressure can green beans. My garden is growing but not producing much for some reason, but what does come out of the garden will be canned. I also learned about small engine repair from my hubby. He is a wizard when it comes to fixing a carburetor. He didn’t realize I was paying attention, but I learned a lot. I at least could help someone if they were fixing a lawnmower, generator or other small engines. This is a huge skill I learned.
I’d like to learn to make soap, candles or to sew. That is on my bucket list this year. Over the years I have learned other skills and camping has helped. I can build a fire from almost anything, keep animals out of camp, hunt animals and much more.
I know this is short today, but we are headed out soon to bale hay. Wish us luck. Thank you for reading and hope your day is great. Stay safe and be prepared, not scared. Her’s another article to read that has a list of prepper skills that a must have. Please like and subscribe my blog. Thank you.

As for fishing, in my opinion, if the SHTF the only way to fish is with traps; it is too hard and too time-consuming to fish with a line and hook. Medical training has got to be close to the top of the list when it comes to skills.
Great ideas on skills. Fishing is important.
